cbc is the only major canadian news agency that is carrying a full article about the 6 women in harpers cabinet. the star and the globe and mail both treated this subject in whole articles detailing the cabinet itself, and mentioned in a few lines the decrease from 9 to 6 women, or the overall aggregate decrease of the size of cabinet.
its near enraging that this is not a greater concern of the public. it is treated as something passe, a blip of commentary to mention inside a whole article. so kudos to cbc.
what ive learned is that the portfolios the women of harpers cabinet carry are the traditional portfolios and positions women get to be awarded as tokens in a cabinet of men.
once more, it is a female minister of heritage, who is also acting as the minister for the status of women.
loudmouth rona ambrose is going to play a key role as... minister of the environment.
a woman is responsible for international cooperation and franco relations.
a woman is minister of national revenue and western economic diversification. this is the closest to a real position in cabinet so far.
Diane finley is minister of human resources and social development. though she has a background in major canadian private and crown corporations, holding senior executive roles.
it can be seen that women are understood as being good at facilitating interpersonal roles. they can do the jobs that encourage sharing and social networks. and im in class so i cant really comment intelligently futher.
all im saying is, theres a sociology to what women get to do in parliament. makes me sick.
